We can’t turn back the clock, more than half of the world’s population has a social media account, but we can focus on curbing harmful side-effects. We Propose a series of recommendations in order to attempt to mitigate this:

  1. Algorithms should be transparent with how they feed us information.
  2. Platforms must be accountable for posts that cause self-harm and depression.
  3. Social media firms must find them and ban them, along with explicit content targeted at minors.
  4. No push notifications for minors.
  5. Default off on autoplay

Young people can also chip in:

  • We can try to limit our screen time voluntarily.
  • We can refocus on traditional ways of play and spending time with real people

Our generation faces an existential threat to our happiness, mental health and, in extreme cases, our physical survival.
